Banga best translates as “style,” but for Angolans, banga dress embodies the spirit of the climate, music, culture, and most importantly, the individual. In this frenetic exploration of Angolan sartorial aesthetics Coréon Dú takes us across his home country to excavate the manifestations of banga. For local style celebrity Papa Swegué, a slow, thoughtful promenade moves passersby to stop and admire him. In the traditional ceremonies of the Uíge Province elders mock the ostentatious nature of banga while donning their own fashionable garb. Meanwhile influencers in the United States and Europe are hiring Angolan models and taking notes from banga on their runway and in the streets. -KM
