People seeking enlightenment attend a retreat at the “Happiness Academy,” where workshops and social gatherings focus on “laughter, orgasm, and meditation.” The leader of this center Skypes in to talk to his congregation as “Raël”—but the film focuses not as much on the religious practices of the center’s worshippers as the love triangle of three attendees. In particular, one woman, played by Laure Calamy, commands our attention as she overcomes insecurity to connect with a more confident woman and a pop singer whom she desires. Reality and fiction are two sides of the same coin in this documentary/narrative hybrid, which had its U.S. Premiere at New Directors/New Films. -KM
