Set against the backdrop of Ferguson, Missouri in the years surrounding Michael Brown’s death, For Ahkeem follows the story of Daje Shelton. She’s growing up in St. Louis, where she’s been court ordered to attend a school for troubled youth. In Daje’s world, the dramatics of teenage life─friends, grades, boyfriends, and eventually a pregnancy─collide with the stark struggles of being black in the United States. Generationally entrenched poverty and systematic racism tear apart the world around Daje, as she loses classmates to gun violence and witnesses the justice system’s failure in response to Brown’s death. Nevertheless, she learns from her commanding mother and endeavors to grow up with grace and determination. -KM
