For the residents of the idyllic St. Bernard Parish on the outer perimeter of the Louisiana bayou, identity is a source of immense pride as well as some sadness. Through recreations and interviews, we learn of the immense influence that this small community has had on American history and culture: from participating in every American war to contributing to the invention of jazz. Recent revelations about the true ancestry of the group—that they are descended from immigrants from the Canary Islands—have transformed the way that the residents view themselves. Through the community members’ interviews we can see an insistence that their contribution to US history and culture not be forgotten like their ancestors’. -LA
