Each year, the International Science and Engineering Fair, “the Olympics of science fairs,” welcomes 1700 students from around the world. The finalists are high-schoolers of tremendous dedication, voracious curiosity, and freakish talent. There’s Anjali, who as a 13-year-old freshman scored a perfect ACT. And Myllena, who attends a remote school in Brazil and dreams of ending Zika. And Robbie, who made it to ISEF while almost failing high school math. Amid the breathless highs and crushing lows of high-stakes competition, a generation of power-nerds is finding its elite, and we’re along for the ride. Watching these young inventors, hackers, and (maybe) future Nobellians at work, it’s hard not to feel there’s hope for humanity after all.
