17-year-old Sole navigates a huge spectrum of issues in this unique coming-of-age story: loss and grief, an eating disorder, political activism, radical self-expression and her emerging sexuality. An academic go-getter with big plans in New York, Sole suddenly finds herself an orphan after her father’s death and is sent to live with her flighty grandmother (Lynn Whitfield, Eve’s Bayou) in Los Angeles. The two clash, and Sole turns to her rebellious teenaged neighbors to make a political art project. The three bond over their familial angst and a youthful jouissance. Sole’s deeply buried grief can’t help but emerge in dangerous ways, however, threatening to overwhelm her and alienate her new-found friends and family. -ST
