Tell Them We Are Rising is the story of how education is a gateway to empowerment. Including in its scope the embargos on knowledge enforced during slavery, student-led Civil Rights Protests of the 60s, and the Historically Black Colleges of present day, a portrait of perseverance and determination is given light within a narrative that so often ignores black history. Archival footage and interviews with former students and historians lends richness to discussions of Booker T Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, and incidents at Southern University—incidents that resonate today. Though the struggle for equality continues, the work of HBCUs has brought us far, and with grace and strength we are still rising. -AL
