By now it’s a familiar story: an industry propped up and made fabulous by a dedicated black community confronting discriminatory barriers to survival. In the 1980s, a fascinating subculture of underground roller-skating emerged, with black communities developing hugely varied and impressive skating styles in cities across the US. Amazing musical talent was also birthed in these rinks, including Salt-N-Pepa and Queen Latifah. Yet today, in a racially-charged environment, places to skate are growing scarcer. This is a subculture that was made for the big screen, and United Skates draws us in wholeheartedly into its frenetic, vibrant world, elegantly arguing for its respect, support, and hopefully, revival. -ST
