Maisha and Brandon are moving in opposite directions: she’s changing majors, leaving town for a new school, taking a leap of faith. He’s talking about settling down, starting a family, hoping to heal some of the scars his own father left in raising him. For the moment, though, they’re still together, unified by habit and comfort, but above all by their shared devastation at the daily injustices to which they’re subject as young African-Americans and their shared resolve to keep pushing back. As it weaves the love story at its center, Woke remains world-weary yet open-hearted, looking outward, surveying the voices and faces of the righteously indignant class of 2017. -JK
