A Sense of Place questions the impact of race on French-speaking Africans living in the United States. Linguist, restaurant owner, student—they give a pragmatic account of integration, what the American Dream meant to them and how they are perceived in the U.S. Casual dialogues in a New Orleans neighborhood, an old Louisiana plantation, and a Senegalese restaurant in Chicago tell us about the often-difficult relationship between African-Americans and Africans in America, conflicted memories of slavery and ideas of cultural heritage. Featuring music by Sarah McCoy of New Orleans.

Le sens de sa place questionne la racisation d’Africains vivant aux États-Unis. Ils sont linguiste, restaurateur, étudiant, et racontent leur intégration, ce qu’a été leur rêve américain et comment ils s’y sentent perçus. Ces conversations amicales ont lieu à la Nouvelle-Orléans, dans une ancienne plantation de Louisiane, dans un restaurant sénégalais à Chicago, et en disent long sur les relations parfois difficiles entre Afro-Américains et Africains d’Amérique, la divergence des mémoires de l’esclavage et des héritages culturels.
